District Win Number Two

Garrard County got off to a bit of a slow start Friday night on Homecoming before scoring the game’s first 35 points in a 56-24 win over Jackson County.
“I was worried about our mental state coming in with Homecoming and being out of school. I don’t feel like we came in with the best state of mind overall,” Garrard coach Mark Scenters said.
The Generals did take it to the Lions on the game’s opening drive. Jackson moved all the way to the Garrard 11 yard line on nine running plays before a Zach Hounshell hit on quarterback Joseph Campos forced a fumble that Tyler Ray recovered at the Lion 15 yard line.
The fumble came right after a Garrard timeout. “Coach Kirk [Tim] got our minds focused and we played pretty good football for a while,” Scenters said.
The Lions failed to score on the ensuing first possession but that was the only time the Generals stopped them all night.
Markell Hayes scored on a three yard run just before the end of the first period and Ray had two touchdowns and Fred Hayes one in the second quarter for a 28-0 Lion lead at intermission.
Ray’s first score came on a 53 yard punt return where he went virtually untouched. The second came on a 20 yard quick screen pass from quarterback Billy Abney.
Hayes’ score came on a one yard run that he set up by picking off a Campos pass at the Garrard 24 yard line and returning it all the way to the Jackson five yard line.
Garrard stretched the lead to 35-0 early in the third period on a Fred Hayes 21 yard run before Trey Vickers got the Generals on the board with a three yard run. Jackson went for the two-point conversion and got it when Campos passed to Josh Messer.
A one yard Zach Hounshell run gave Garrard a 42-8 lead entering the third quarter.
Scenters had a chance to empty his bench in the fourth period and the Lions scored two more times on a three yard Ryan Napier run and a 21 yard scamper by freshman Jadarious Brown.
Messer and Campos had scoring runs of two and 48 yards for the Generals.
Twelve different Golden Lions carried the ball with Cory Wilson’s 57 yards leading the way.
Will DeMarcus was a perfect eight for eight on PATs.
Hounshell and Austin Napier had eight tackles each to lead the Garrard defense.
“We needed one of those games where we could get everybody in. It’s important that those kids get in,” Scenters said. “They got an opportunity to play football under the lights at Dyehouse Stadium.”

Garrard County travels to Somerset Friday night to take on the Briarjumpers in a key game pitting two teams both undefeated in district play.
The Jumpers are one of the state’s biggest surprises going 7-0 and ranked among the top teams in Class AAA.
When Jay Cobb resigned just before the season began assistant Robbie Lucas took over the Somerset program and the Jumpers haven’t missed a beat while playing what they like to call “Robbie Ball”.
Somerset is coming off a 62-15 win over Taylor County and has outscored its opponents 279-99.
The potent offensive attack is led by junior quarterback Eric Manning who has thrown for 1,318 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing 90 of 156 passes. Manning has ran for 263 yards and one score and for good measure returned an interception for a touchdown against Taylor County.
Sophomore Storm Wilson and junior J.P. Henderlight are Manning’s favorite receivers.
Wilson has caught 35 passes for 544 yards and six touchdowns and Henderlight has 16 receptions for 319 yards and six more scores.
Senior running back Otie Manning has rushed for 355 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Jumper defense is led by senior linebackers Thomas Boyle and Jordan Jones along with junior linebacker Rob Stevenson.
Garrard County is led by senior multi-purpose back Tyler Ray who has rushed for 393 yards and caught 15 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.
Sophomore Cory Wilson has 361 yards rushing and senior Fred Hayes has picked up 332 yards on the ground.

Cougar Football Update
Garrard Middle School lost 24-6 to Boyle County last week to fall to 2-4 on the season. The Cougars trailed only 8-6 midway through the final period in a game Coach Bret Baierlein felt the Cougars could have won.
“We are still making too many mistakes but that is no longer an excuse six games into the season,” Baierlein said. “We are still in the thick of the playoff race and if we can fight our way into the post season we have a team that can make some noise.”

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Youth Deer Season A
Time For Patience, Not Pressure
Kentucky’s youth-only deer season is coming up Oct. 10-11. Safety always comes first, but for adult mentors, patience isn’t far behind. Hunting for big bucks or to fill the freezer may be an adult hunter’s goal, but kids are out there mostly to have fun.
“I would recommend more than anything to make sure the young ones enjoy it,” said Will Connelly, a hunter training officer with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “You shouldn’t put pressure on them to shoot something.”
Letcher County hunter Casey Begley, a 13-year-old who took her first deer last fall, says the best thing about being in the woods is spending time with her dad. Her advice for adults? Be patient with young hunters.
“Help them,” she said. “If they don’t have a good hold on the gun, help them hold the gun up.”
Begley, who uses a wheelchair, says that while she can’t go some places that other hunters can, she’s still able to enjoy the fun and excitement of hunting. She encourages all kids, especially those with physical challenges, to give hunting a try.
“Just go for it,” she says. “Try it out because it’s fun.”
The youngest hunters often have the hardest time being still in a tree stand or blind. Adults can help. Connelly advises parents and other mentors to plan ahead for this restlessness.
“If it’s cold, bring the hand warmers and hot chocolate. If it’s hot, keep the bugs off,” he said. “A good padded seat works wonders. The main thing is to keep kids comfortable.”
A relaxed youth hunter who is familiar with his or her firearm is also a safer hunter. Connelly reminds adults to take kids out ahead of time to shoot their rifles. Make sure kids know their effective shooting range and remind them to stick to it, he said.
“Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, and make sure they have a good backstop before they pull the trigger,” he said. “Some parents think the little .243 won’t shoot very far, but that bullet will go for miles.”
Finally, parents and other mentors should be absolutely sure that kids are ready to hunt before taking them. Every young hunter is different, and some feel comfortable in the field at an earlier age than others. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready to hunt, it might be better to take a camera instead of a rifle this time around.
Kentucky’s youth-only deer season is open to resident and nonresident kids ages 15 and under. Adults must accompany youth gun hunters and remain in a position to take immediate control of the youth’s firearm at all times. Kids under age 12 don’t need a hunting license or deer permit, but those ages 12-15 must have a Kentucky youth hunting license and youth deer permit. Kentucky’s hunter orange clothing law applies during the youth weekend. For complete hunting regulations, check the 2009-10 Kentucky Hunting & Trapping Guide online at fw.ky.gov or pick up a copy wherever hunting licenses are sold.

UK FOOTBALL - Kentucky has a chance to beat South Carolina Saturday in Columbia. Kentucky needs to beat the Gamecocks. I admit it was an almost impossible task to ask Brooks and his boys to beat Florida or Alabama but why can’t Wildcat fans expect UK to compete with the best. The facilities are there, the money is there, only the coach is missing. Brooks likes to cry about the difficulty of playing in the SEC. That’s life. Kentucky is in the SEC. Unless it is willing to drop out and join Conference USA or the ACC you are going to have to compete with the best week in and week out. That’s just the way it is. If you can’t beat Florida, Alabama and Tennessee you have to beat South Carolina, Mississippi State, Vandy and the like. The Cats have lost nine straight to the Gamecocks. It is time for that to stop.
MIKE HARTLINE - My barber Charlie is a big Hartline fan so I may get my ears nipped the next time I go in for a cut but Hartline is not an SEC caliber quarterback. This is not to say he can’t have a good game every now and then like the Arkansas game last season but week in and week out he doesn’t measure up. As long as he is going against Miami OH, Eastern and those type school he is fine. Even in the bowl game last season he played fairly well but East Carolina isn't BCS school even if it was in a bowl. Hartline comes from Canton, OH, the heart of Big 10 territory. His brother was a star wide receiver at Ohio State. Isn’t it funny that the Buckeyes didn’t recruit him? What big time school did other than the Cats? Hartline is a mid-major quarterback at best but we are stuck with him the rest of this year and probably next year also. Brooks is stubborn. He reminds be of Bill Curry when that former coach refused to play Tim Couch as a freshman before basically being forced to. UK recruited two big name quarterbacks in Morgan Newton and Ryan Mossakowski but Brooks is red-shirting them both which makes no sense. Why two good quarterbacks in the same class? One of them should be playing. Brooks also says that UK’s offense is too complicated for a young player to learn in one year. He uses the same excuse for junior college players. Perhaps it is time to dummy down the offense a little and make it easier to learn. USC and Michigan both have freshman quarterbacks. Can the Trojans and Spartans possibly have that much easier to learn offenses?
A Look Back At Garrard County Sports
1985 - Garrard County defeated Henry County 26-8. Mark Rogers got the scoring going with a 19 yard run and Doug Simpson passed to Bo Barnes for a 28 yard score as the Lions led 13-0 at the half. Simpson threw for two more touchdowns, a 10 yarder to Rogers and a 28 yarder to Barnes in the second half.
1977 - Garrard County exploded in the first half to beat Estill County 46-6 in Irvine and improve to 4-1 on the year. Simon Norris scored on runs of one, five and 58 yards and Wilbur Dunn scored on a 31 yard run and returned an interception 46 yards for a score as Garrard led 38-0 at intermission. Garrard’s final score came on a second half 32 yard Dunn touchdown run.
1974 - Garrard County broke the record for points scored in a game with a 65-14 win at MMI. After Bruce Middleton returned the opening kickoff to the Garrard 43 yard line Terry Dunn got the scoring started with a 15 yard run. Dunn scored again from 38 yards out and Darrell Spillman had scoring runs of four and 40 yards as the Lions led 27-0 after one quarter. Barry Kincaid scored on runs of four and two yards for a 40-6 Garrard lead at halftime. Spillman scored again in the second half on a three yard run, Dunn scored on a one yard run and Kincaid scored from eight yards out before Ricky Davis capped off the scoring with a three yard fourth period run.
1969 - Garrard County improved to 6-0 on the year with a 28-0 win at Madison Central. Joe Henderson scored on a seven yard run and Terry Anderson connected with Larry Hurt for a 17 yard score as Garrard led 14-0 at the half. Henderson scored his second touchdown of the game on a 22 yard run in the second half and Barry Davis tacked on a 35 yard touchdown run.
