Confirmed F3 Tornado Formed In Garrard County

An investigation into the nature of the storm that ripped through parts of Garrard County Friday evening before wreaking havoc in Madison and winding down in Estill has been officially determined to have formed in Garrard County without any forewarning.

May 12, 1949 - Members of the Buckeye High School senior class are Elsie Carrier, Norma Long, Johnetta Ray, Darrell Long, Charles H. Rice, Ronald C. Simpson and Dwight Logan.

May 12, 1949 - Excavating at the new hospital site is going on at a rapid rate. Dirt from the excavation is being hauled in every direction. A lot of unsightly holes and depressions can be filled in around town that will add to the general look of things. There is a lot of dirt that has been moved and yet to be moved.

May 12, 1949 - A special meeting of the city council was called by Mayor L. B. Conn this morning just as the paper went to press. The purpose of the meeting was to declare a ban on all dogs for at least 90 days. Dogs will be allowed but only on a leash and must be confined if they are kept at home.

May 14, 1959 - Mrs. Helen Oakes, wife of Bud Oakes, has accepted a position with Agnes Beauty Shop in the Hotel Walker building and assumed her duties there last week. She is a recent graduate of Durham Beauty School in Danville.

May 14, 1959 - Portraits of two of Lancaster’s leading physicians who have died recently were unveiled in a ceremony held Sunday afternoon at the Garrard County memorial hospital. The portraits were of Dr. J. E. Edwards and Dr. Virgil G. Kinnaird.

May 14, 1959 - Mrs. Roberta Kurtz and Mrs. Freda Pendleton of the Modern Beauty Shop left the Greater Cincinnati Airport Sunday for a two-week stay in Paris, France. While in Paris they will attend the L’ Orell Beauty School of Advance Hair Styling. They will also take many interesting tours in France and other European countries.

May 14, 1959 - The senior class of Lancaster High School were entertained at dinner last Thursday evening at the Crossroads in Danville. Hostesses were Mrs. Edith Marsee and Mrs. Viola Sanders, homeroom mothers, and Mrs. Faye Mercer, class sponsor.

May 14, 1959 - Valedictorian of Buckeye High School is Barbara Sebastian, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Sebastian. Salutatorian is Nannie Lee Eagle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Eagle.

May 8, 1969 - Mrs. Vestina Dorton Roberts, 85, widow of Courtney Roberts, died at 3:30 am Saturday at Garrard County Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of Lancaster Christian Church. She is survived by one son, J. T. Pollard; one step-son, Ernest Roberts, Lansing, Michigan; one sister, Mrs. Doxie Marsee, Lancaster; two brothers, Kinnaird Dorton and W. A. Dorton, Garrard County; five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 3:00 pm Monday at Ramsey Funeral Home by Rev. Charles Highfield, assisted by Rev. William G. Humphrey. Burial was in the Lancaster Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gabe Huffman, Carl Criscillis, Tommy Long, Charles Tapp, Herbert Dorton and Joe Huffman.

May 8, 1969 - Mr. and Mrs. John Lee Rankin, David Rankin and Penny Baughman, of Stanford, attended the Kentucky Colonel barbecue at Anchorage, Kentucky on Sunday.

May 10, 1979 - April 30 the Delta Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi had their Founder’s Day service at the home of Mrs. Ruth Ann Morgan. They also had installation of officers for the next year. They are as follows: Mary Bolton, treasurer, Carolyn Metcalfe, recording secretary, Helen Ward, vice-president, Mollie Henderson, president and Ruth Ann Morgan, corresponding secretary.

May 10, 1979 - Among the local persons attending the Governor’s Derby Day breakfast on Saturday were Lucille Estridge, Peggy Gaffney, Janet Smith, Lillian Gaffney, Elmer Wilmot, Freda Pendleton, Shirley Sculley, Geraldine Hunt, Dorothy Bowling and Jimmy Cox.

May 11, 1989 - Charming 86 year old Anita Moore, owner of The Garrard Mills, a three story flour and feed mill, “home of the famous Glen Lily Flour”, will close the 88 year old business May 13, the only one of its kind, ending an era in Garrard County.

May 11, 1989 - Doug Simpson, a former Garrard County High School baseball player, was selected as the OVC’s Player of the Week for April 25.

May 11, 1989 - Mrs. Ethel Ray Nevius, 86, 103 North Paulding Street, Lancaster, died at 7:00 am Tuesday, May 9 at Garrard County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Lancaster Baptist Church and the widow of James Nevius. She is survived by several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday (today) at Ramsey Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Bob Rush. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery. Pallbearers will be McClellan Sebastian, Michael Ray, J. W. Tyree, J. B. Land, Ray Hammonds and Glenn May.
